Having spent over five years in the Andaman tourism industry, we’ve witnessed numerous travelers meticulously plan their trips yet still make significant blunders.
1. Planning for a Short Duration
In this time, you can visit Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil, or if you prefer a more laid-back experience, it might be best to choose a single resort to settle into.
This way, you can relax and enjoy the surroundings without the hassle of constantly moving your belongings.
For longer stays, consider venturing to some lesser-known spots, like North Andaman. However, a trip shorter than five days is generally not advisable.
2. Not Packing the Right Clothes
Many of you might be curious about what to wear when visiting the Andaman Islands. Remember, this is a tropical destination.
You’ll likely spend much of your time on the beautiful beaches that characterize these islands.
If you love sandy shores, swimming, and enjoying sunsets, be sure to pack appropriately.
Opt for loose-fitting cotton garments, rubber flip-flops, quick-drying towels, and, most importantly, sun protection.
Avoid high heels, as you’ll be doing quite a bit of walking.
If you’re traveling during the monsoon season, be sure to include rain gear like an umbrella, a raincoat, waterproof shoes or sandals, and a windbreaker.
For those seeking adventure, Andaman offers plenty of hiking opportunities. Make sure to bring comfortable walking or hiking shoes and attire suitable for long treks through the forests.
3. Not Booking in Advance
Making reservations is an essential part of travel planning. Many people find it challenging to organize their trips, so here are some helpful tips.
We suggest booking your accommodations, ferries, and return flights in advance to ease your mind once you arrive. This way, you won’t have to worry about securing your next stay.
For those traveling in large groups, it’s a good idea to arrange activities ahead of time for a smoother experience.
If you’re visiting during the peak season, prioritize making all your bookings in advance, as availability can quickly become limited.
4. Expecting Fast Internet Everywhere
Let’s set the record straight on a few misconceptions. Many assume that data and internet connectivity in the Andaman Islands function just like they do on the Indian mainland.
As of June 2020, that is not the case.
You may experience limited or no mobile data service and unreliable Wi-Fi. When it comes to connectivity, expect only the basics. This means video calls, WhatsApp messages, and Instagram updates may not be feasible.
Sending office files can take a considerable amount of time, so it’s wise to delay important business tasks while in Andaman.
This lack of connectivity contributes to Andaman’s charm as a natural paradise.
5. Thinking Your SIM Will Work Everywhere
While connectivity can often be a challenge, the internet does have its moments here.
If possible, bring a BSNL SIM card with you, as it tends to perform the best.
As noted earlier, there’s no assurance of a reliable internet connection, so it’s best not to rely on it.
6. Not Carrying Essential Medicines
Many travelers often assume that medical supplies will be readily available during their stay.
Keep in mind that most items in the Andaman Islands are imported from the mainland.
Although the stores may be well-stocked, there can be shortages during busy periods, which is certainly a worst-case scenario.
To ensure your safety, it’s wise to bring along essential items and consider packing a first-aid kit if you can. It’s always better to be prepared.
7. Expecting Luxurious Cruises
When it comes to cruising, you won’t find luxury vessels like those at many other popular beach locations.
The ferries, or catamarans, are primarily used for transporting passengers between islands and do not offer overnight accommodations. Their journeys typically last just a few hours.
There are some liveaboard options, but these need to be reserved in advance.
These are mainly intended for diving excursions.
8. Expecting the Andamans are Exclusively for Honeymooners
The Andaman Islands are a top choice for couples seeking a romantic getaway. Numerous restaurants offer the perfect setting for intimate dinners.
Additionally, the stunning beaches and breathtaking sunsets create unforgettable experiences for lovers.
While Andaman is fantastic for couples, it caters to a broader audience as well!
The trend of romance in this region began around 2016, with the emergence of new dining spots and a rise in blogs highlighting romantic locations.
Prior to that, Andaman primarily attracted families, backpackers, and adventure enthusiasts—and still does!
